A video is being shared between my Greek-speaking Cypriot friends, showing an old woman who is, supposedly, the last person to leave Varosha during the Turkish invasion of 1974. Whilst watching the video I remembered a story that my late grandfather told me. His family and him were forced out of their home during the first phase of the Turkish invasion in 1974. Between the first and second phase, granddad got the chance to return to his village to get some clothes and other necessities for the family. He filled a bag with clothes, cleaned the fridge(!), locked the house door and returned back to Nicosia, without taking with him jewellery and other valuables. He was sure that it was a matter of days before they returned home. This return is long overdue and the division is as banal as it is unnatural.
